Give Individual Students Access to Videos

If you restrict access to videos in Panotpo that come from automated classroom lecture capture, you may have an instance where you need to give access to an individual student or subset of students (i.e., due to absences).

1. Create a sub-folder within your class's Panopto folder.

On your Canvas site, go to Panopto Video and click the 'Add Folder' button. Type in a name for the folder and hit Enter.

Click into the new folder and from the three dots on the right, and select 'Share.'

2. Remove the class list, which was inherited from the parent folder.

Click 'Change' and keep the 'Keep 1 member as added user' checkbox checked. This refers to the Creator list, meaning that staff/admins will still have access to the new folder.

Click 'Stop Inheriting,' then 'Done.'

3. Copy the appropriate video(s) from the parent folder into the new sub-folder. Make sure the video(s) is published.

4. Add individual students as 'Viewers' to the sub-folder, and share the link with them.

Under the sub-folder's Settings, go to 'Share' and then add the student(s)' mit.edu email address with the 'Viewer' permission.

Share the direct link to the sub-folder with the student(s), as they will not be able to access it through the parent folder, which is still restricted.

Note:  If you are unable to add a student to a folder, it is probably because they have not logged into Panopto in the past.   Please ask them to Touchstone authenticate at https://mit.hosted.panopto.com Links to an external site.   Once they have done so, you should be able to give them access to the folder.
