WGS.137 Neurodiversity & Disability
This course introduces students to Disability Studies, examining key theoretical concepts and texts with an emphasis on writing, film, digital media, and other creative work by disabled and neurodivergent writers, theorists, designers, activists, and visual and performing artists. We will investigate medical and social models of disability, paying close attention to the complex interconnections between race, gender, class, sexuality, age, ethnicity, religion, indigeneity, and immigration status within each of these models. In addition, we will address emerging connections between disability, place, and the environment, investigating issues of accessibility and repair in natural and built environments. Over the course of the semester, we will investigate themes of community, care, and creativity. Assignments include one critical essay, one personal essay or creative project, and one reflection essay.
