Homework

Please upload a .pdf file named name_week2.pdf (where name is your first and last name) with responses to the following questions:

Question 1:  Carefully examine the experimental design used in BrightBeat. List three things about its structure that make it a strong design for supporting the claims in the paper. Bonus: List something you would do differently to improve the design for enabling the study to produce even stronger claims.

Question 2:  If you were to replicate or expand on McDuff et al 2013 in the upcoming presidential election, what additional questions would you ask? How would you re-design the experiment to answer these questions?  Bonus:  Describe a version of the experiment that might potentially provide greater unity across groups who are emotionally divided and why you think it could succeed in today's US climate.  (Saying "Elect the candidate who claims they'll unify people" is not an acceptable solution.)

Question 3 - A and B: List two ideas you would like to do a project on - A and B.  For each one, state:  (i) What do you want your project to test or show?  (ii) How will you design an experiment/study to show that?   (iii) What kind of data do you need and how will you get it if physical distancing is still required (preventing traditional human-subjects in-person studies from being approved)?   (iv) Who will collaborate with you on this?  (Projects A and B can have different collaborators, but we are discouraging solo projects).  These are questions to hone in on the class research project, and it is OK if you can only guess at parts of them for now; we will have a bunch of discussions together to help each of you come up with a project you can succeed with.   Please set up discussions on Canvas with people to try to find collaborators, and we will also help you match-make where we see potential synergies.
