16.06 Principles: Automatic Control
This subject teaches the fundamentals of classical control, which deals with the analysis and design of (mostly) linear control systems using transfer functions to describe systems. Later subjects, such as 16.30, deal with the control of systems using state-space descriptions of systems, and the tools that are available using state-space techniques. Although classical control has been around much longer, and state-space control is sometimes viewed as more "modern", both classical control and state-space control are important in modern control engineering.
