MIT's International Students Office (ISO) CPT eCourse Homepage

ATTENTION: CPT Authorization Requests for the Summer 2025 academic term can ONLY be submitted to iMIT after March 10, 2025

The mission of the International Students Office is to provide high-quality advising on immigration regulations, aid in the maintenance of legal status, assist international students in their transition to life in the United States at MIT, promote interactions between international populations and the U.S. and advocate on behalf of the international student population.

The ISO is moving all employment information sessions to Canvas and into an eCourse format. As such, this ISO P Curricular Practical Training eCourse eCourse is required for all students in F-1 status, wishing to obtain off-campus work authorization.

F-1 Students who have been in lawful, full-time student status for at least one full academic year (combination of Fall and Spring academic terms) are eligible to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to be used before the completion of a student's degree program if the work/employment is a required component of the curriculum, which ALL students (international and domestic students) in the program must complete to earn the degree, OR:

  • The internship/experience that is evaluated by an MIT Professor and meets the criteria specified below:
    • (a) is granted academic credit under a specific course/subject number in the student’s major degree requirement, AND
    • (b) the course/subject and academic credit must count towards completion of the degree (must fulfill an elective or mandatory credit that counts towards fulfilling minimum degree requirements), AND
    • (c) the student must be enrolled in the specific internship/experiential learning course/subject in the student’s major degree program curriculum during the academic term in which the experience is conducted and CPT is authorized.
  • The employment is related to the student's degree/major field of study.
  • It is approved by the student's academic department, and the dates are between the eligible MIT Academic Calendar dates.
  • F-1 Students planning on applying for F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) MUST review and pass the ISO Curricular Practical Training eCourse and related quiz before requesting the new Form I-20 needed for CPT authorization.

When requesting a new Form I-20 via iMIT, students will be asked:

  • The date they finished the Curricular Practical Training eCourse.
  • To upload a copy of their Curricular Practical Training eCourse quiz results (MUST pass CPT eCourse quiz with 90% or higher grade).
  • Following a review and completion of the CPT eCourse, if a student has any additional questions, they may contact their ISO Advisor.
