Homework

Please upload a .pdf file named name.pdf (where name is your first and last name) with responses to the following questions:

Question 1:  Based on the classic theory of Schwarz and Clore, Describe (a) A personal situation in your life or in the life of somebody you know (you don't need to say who it is) where you think some of the theory from Schwarz & Clore  may apply. State clearly what the emotion is in the situation and how their theory applies to it. (b) State also where you think it probably would fail, despite what the paper describes.

Question 2:  How might their theory be used by a manipulative pollster to  bias the answers people give on a political poll? Give at least two techniques the pollster could use. Include the exact wording "script" of what you would have the pollster say and ask, and how you think the outcome would be affected.

Question 3:  A. When should affect recognition aim to recognize only what most people think they recognize (e.g. faces and voices and gestures/posture), and when is it OK for a computer to recognize affect in ways that we humans cannot perceive (e.g. non-contact heart-rate or stress imaging)?   B.  When do you think the latter is NOT OK - give an example of what you think is inappropriate use (and yet something you could imagine a business or government using).

Question 4:  Describe in a paragraph the progress this week that you have done on your project plan.    List two of the most relevant citations that you've found and read this week, and summarize in a sentence or two what you found valuable about each reference  relative to your project.  (It can even be "this approach is close to what I thought I wanted to do, but now I see it's something I don't want to implement because...".)
